May 22nd Board Change

Service Changes effective May 22nd, 2011

  • Route 3 Chesapeake Blvd
    • Plan: Stays on Chesapeake Blvd instead of using Chesapeake Street
    • My Thoughts: I used to live off of Route 3, and I’m fine with this change
  • Route 6 Liberty St
    • Plan: Interlined with Route 14 Battlefield Blvd
    • My Thoughts: Route 14 was carved out of Route 13 because of on-time issues with the Great Bridge Bridge’s lift schedule timing with buses arriving from TCC right at the bridge was scheduled to lift.  Savvy operators made a point to hurry it up to get across before the lift happened (I remember one instance where an operator specifically instructed a passenger to have a seat and put their money in after the bus cleared the bridge – this is the only reason we made it to Robert Hall because bridge lifts can cost 15 minutes minimum).   DO NOT REATTACH THIS PORTION OF THE BUS TO ANOTHER, WORK WITH THE COAST GUARD TO RETIME BRIDGE LIFTS INSTEAD!

  • Route 34 Rudee Inlet Shuttle – NEW
    • Plan: New Seasonal service to serve the restaurants on the Owl’s Creek side (west of Pacific Ave) and will run 12 Noon to Midnight daily, from May 22nd until the end of the VB WAVE season.  Service areas include: South Loop (transfer between 30, 31, and 32), Norfolk Ave, Mediterranean Ave, Winston-Salem Ave/5th St
    • My Thoughts: I am not familiar with this area, so I will not comment
  • Route 36 Holland Rd
    • Plan: Modified to operate via newly opened portion of Buckner Blvd and will no longer serve Dam Neck Rd (including Monet Dr 7-Eleven, which is also nearest stop for safe access to Landstown Commons)
    • My Thoughts: Before you ask, no this will not mean the 36 will start meeting the 20 at Pembroke!! Instead, this allows the bus a shorter routing to/from TCC to help improve on-time performance.  I have officially requested new bus stops along the area, as this is my neighborhood (Buckner Farms) and I know it best.  Suggested stop locations: Buckner & Competitor (South Rosemont Library) and Buckner between Crofts Pride & Purebred
  • Route 37 Oceana
    • Plan: Every 70 minutes instead of every 60 minutes to help on time performance
    • My Thoughts: This route has almost no ridership and is scheduled for the chopping block anyways.  Why not ease the pain sooner and get rid of it now?
  • Route 44C
    • Plan: Route would be renamed/renumbered to Route 43 Parkview.  Service would operate along existing 44C routing between Wal-Mart to High & Florida.  From there, would roughly follow old Route 300A to County & Court.  Service between Wal-Mart & Victory Crossing would be discontinued!! There would be no changes to Route 44 between Chesapeake Square, Victory Crossing, High & Florida, and Norfolk General Hospital (so, to get between Wal-Mart and Victory Crossing, take Route 43 to High & Florida and transfer to Route 44 heading towards Chesapeake Square)
    • My Thoughts: Why is the Wal-Mart to Victory Crossing leg being removed?  I’m assuming one bus isn’t enough to do, but what about the other passengers coming from a bus to Victory Crossing expecting to transfer to the 44C to do their shopping at Wal-Mart?
  • Route 57
    • Plan: due to Gilmerton Bridge construction, would operate via the High Rise Bridge using Interstate 464 to Interstate 64 to U.S. 17 (George Washington Hwy).  On-Call service in Camelot would be discontinued (regular Camelot service would not be affected)
    • My Thoughts: While it would’ve been nice to watch the Gilmerton take shape while riding through it on the 57, the reality is that construction will make that portion of U.S. 13/U.S. 460 a nightmare to operate on.  This is a good call.
  • Peninsula Riders
    • Time adjustments on Routes 104 Marshall and 114 Weaver.  Nothing major
  • MAX Route 961
    • Plan: the following Weekday trips are eliminated due to low ridership: 5:48 AM, 8:00 AM, 5:45 PM, and 6:15 PM trips are eliminated.
    • My Thoughts: Uh, HRT: from which direction will these trips be eliminated?  Towards Norfolk or Towards Newport News?

Disclaimer: these may change as we get closer to the May 22nd Board Change

Over 40% of Resort Area overnight visitors will visit that area off of Winston-Salem Avenue at some time during their trip. The Route 34 pulls a single trip off Route 30 and makes it over there.

    • Ok, that makes sense. I was chatting with a #29 operator one evening and he says “they can walk from the 33” and he also doesn’t understand why it doesn’t run in the mornings

Now that I had a chance to see an overhead view on Google Maps: Winston-Salem Ave in the afternoons makes sense: allow the visitors to get to the marina without having to cross U.S. 60 (Pacific Ave). Although I do wonder what morning ridership might look like (workers getting to the marina, for example?)
